Plot Summary
A group of students are assigned a project for health class. Alex, a shy Chinese girl, has many great ideas but is reluctant to share them because she does not want to be judged by the other group members. After sitting quietly in many group meetings, Alex confesses her feelings of insecurity to her roommate, Lacey. After their chat, Alex is inspired to "just say something" and share her project idea with the group. Not only does the group like and use her idea, but she ultimately gains self-confidence.
In the beginning of the film, a group of students are in health class. The teacher reminds them of a group project that is due shortly and class is dismissed. After the class ends, a group of students, Alex, Katie, and Kevin, meets outside the classroom and discusses when and where their group will meet to work on the project. Alex is both nervous and excited to meet with the other students outside of class.
When Alex arrives at the meeting spot, Katie is already there. The two girls ask each other how they have been, make small talk, and check their phones in silence while waiting for the other member of the group. Kevin finally shows up and they begin discussing their project and potential ideas. At first, Alex contributes a few words but after a while she struggles to keep up with the conversation because English is not her first language. After sitting quietly throughout the meeting, she decides to try and contribute more next time.
The group meets again for a second time, but Alex continues to remain silent. She is afraid her ideas, although great, will be mocked because she cannot always convey her thoughts clearly and sometimes makes mistakes. Whenever she thinks about expressing her ideas, she imagines the other group members laughing at her and as a result, she decides to say nothing at all.
After the meeting, Alex goes back to her dorm room feeling defeated. Lacey, Alex’s outgoing and very friendly roommate, sees that Alex is upset and asks what is wrong. Alex tells Lacey about her concerns and the difficulty she is having with her health group. Lacey shares with Alex that she, too, used to be shy and quiet until she stepped out of her comfort zone and forced herself to speak up. She reassures Alex that everyone makes mistakes, but what is most important is to "just say something."
Inspired by her talk with Lacey, Alex asks Katie and Kevin if they want to hear her idea at the next group meeting. She shares her project idea and surprisingly, they all really like it. The group confesses that they thought Alex didn't care about the project because she was so quiet, but she actually has "really good ideas."
Alex leaves the meeting feeling more confident than ever and says to herself, "Just say something. You will make it."
